圣谛第一义

梁武帝问达摩大师:“什么是圣谛第一义?”
达摩大师回答:“大彻大悟的境界中没有凡圣的区别。”
武帝又问:“我面对的这个人是谁?”
达摩回答:“不认识。”

达摩与武帝话不投机，就渡过长江北上去到魏国。后来，武帝将这件事告诉了志公和尚，志公问道:“陛下，知道这个人是谁吗?”武帝答道:“不认识。”志公却说:“他就是传授佛心印的观音大士。”武帝听了很后悔，想遣派使者将达摩请回来。志公说:“别说陛下派使者去请，就是全国上下所有的百姓都去请，他也不会再回来了。”

Emperor Liang Wu once asked Master Bodhidharma,“What is the highest truth?”

Bodhidharma replied, “In the state of ultimate enlightenment, there is no distinction between the ordinary and the sacred.”

The emperor then asked, “Who is the one standing before me?”

Bodhidharma answered, “I do not know.”

Finding no common ground in their conversation, Bodhidharma crossed the Yangtze River and traveled north to the Wei Kingdom.Later, Emperor Wu recounted this encounter to Zen Master Zhigong.Zhigong asked,“Your Majesty, do you know who that person was?”The emperor replied,“I do not know.”Zhigong then said,“He is none other than Avalokiteśvara, the great bodhisattva who transmits the seal of the Buddha’s mind.”Upon hearing this, the emperor deeply regretted his actions and wished to send envoys to invite Bodhidharma back.Zhigong said,“Even if Your Majesty sent messengers, or if the entire nation went to invite him back, he would never return.”
